The Wanderbug’s One Perfect Day series asks travel bloggers around the world for their favourite insider tips & experiences in the cities they love most. I think it’s the best way to find fresh inspiration for visiting a city, with a handful of icons & must-dos interspersed with more low-key (but just as special) experiences that the guidebooks miss. Medellin, a bustling metropolis nestled in the Andes of northwestern Colombia, is often referred to as “the city of eternal spring.” The delightful year-round climate has made this beautiful city a popular destination for both travelers and expats alike. It’s recently been named the most innovative city in the world and there’s something to please just about everyone; whether you’re after gastronomy, nightlife, culture, history, or adventure, Medellin is sure to please.
My perfect day in Medellin, Colombia, would look a little something like this…
Morning
A perfect day would begin in my very own apartment on the south end of the city where I’d wake up to gorgeous mountain views, enjoy a hearty home-cooked breakfast, and get ready for the day (including slathering on a high-factor sunscreen!).
I’d head by bus to my favorite neighborhood, El Poblado, where I’d meander the street known as Via Primavera which boasts some of the best boutique shopping in the city as well as a smattering of gourmet coffee shops and restaurants. When I grew tired of shopping or my cash ran out, whichever came first, I’d settle into the plush seats at Cafe Velvet for a perfectly brewed americano.
Afternoon
My afternoon would begin at my favorite lunch spot, Verdeo. This vegetarian restaurant just a few blocks from Via Primavera has never failed to impress my visiting friends—the portobello blue cheese burger is my go-to meal every time! A glass of house red wine makes a perfect addition, or if I’m not in the mood for alcohol, their freshly-squeezed juice of the day is always a great alternative.
Once finished with lunch, I would head north to Ciudad del Rio for a little bit of culture. The Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellin (modern art museum) always has fascinating new exhibits on display and is small enough that you needn’t spend more than an hour or so there to see it all.
By this point in the day I’d need some time to rest. Leaving the museum I’d stroll past some impressive street art and towering red brick apartment buildings to reach the nearby park where I’d lay out a blanket and just relax, read a book, or partake in some excellent people watching. This park, known as Parque Cultural MAMM Ciudad del Rio, is a project associated with the modern art museum; it’s always abuzz with activity and is a popular hangout for young, hip Colombians.
Evening
The absolute best place in Medellin to take in the setting sun is at the top of The Charlee Hotel, so back to El Poblado I would go. I’d happily sip an overpriced beer at Envy Rooftop Bar just to marvel at my unbelievable surroundings from that vantage point.
For a carnivorous dinner and an excellent drink list, I’d head to Humo Barbeque and Bar. Later, I’d inevitably find myself in the heart of El Poblado at the popular Parque Lleras with a group of good friends and a bottle of Aguardiente. My perfect day in Medellin would be rounded out by dancing the night away to electro beats at my favorite club, Calle 9+1.

I’ve been to Medellín a few times and I love this city. Though El Poblado is very safe and more “touristy,” there are still a lot of locals. One of my favourite spots is the El Loco Carnal at Parque Lleras where I get the two-meat burrito. It’s affordable and they give you a few sauces for your burrito. Get it with a Michelada. But one thing everyone has to do in Medellín is go to a football — unreal.
Cool tips, thanks Vincent! 🙂
I lived in Medellin for three months and your piece made me miss it all over again! I’d suggest a few more places outside of El Poblado for any expats who prefer a more authentic experience of the city, though – and Laureles never seems to get any love but is a wonderful part of the city to live in!
Thanks Flora – LOVE your screen name, Flora the Explorer is adorable! I’m glad Leah’s piece struck a chord, and thanks for the tips 🙂
As somebody who lives in Medellin myself, I do love all of the places that you have put in your “1 day” list – they are all fantastic! It is a shame that this covers such a minuscule and very Americanised area of the city though. Little of what you have mentioned (aside from the views) are unique to Colombia. I would always encourage any visitor to stay outside of Poblado and see what the whole city has to offer!
Thanks for your insight Tom!
When my husband and I backpacked through Medellin we accidentally stumbled upon the Botanical Gardens which we loved, but when we planned a day out to Envigado we found it wasn’t as nice as we were expecting. Or hoping. 🙂

The only reason to go to Envigado is to visit Parque El Salado…otherwise it’s just a suburb of Medellin
I didn’t even know about Parque El Salado, that looks nice. Although after a cable car ride up to Avi and an afternoon in the botanical gardens, I think we were ‘parked’ out already in that city.
Thanks for featuring my post, Genevieve! Love how it turned out 🙂
Glad to hear it Leah, thanks so much for writing it! 🙂
