Cheronissos is a remote beach and harbour on the northern tip of Sifnos, a tiny Cycladic island between Paros and Milos. When David and I spent two weeks in Greece, I think we saw more jaw-dropping beaches in the short time we were there, than I’d seen in my entire life to date. Despite the steep competition, it was the tiny beach of Cheronissos in Sifnos that captured my heart, and has captured my imagination ever since.
It’s not a long, white sandy beach like Aghia Kiriaki in Milos and we weren’t there for sunset, like we were at Parasporos in Paros, but Cheronissos had the most stunning setting of them all. The best part was, that for the first hour of the day, I had the water entirely to myself. In the middle of July!
The tranquility is something that can’t be easily bought, or even found in the Greek islands during summer. I was completely baffled, later that week, when talking to other tourists on a bus back from the popular beach resort, Vathy, that they’d spent every day either at Vathy or Platis Gialis, the other beach resort town. These beaches are big and lovely, but they’re always crowded.
How to get to Cheronissos, Sifnos?
Cheronissos beach is located on the northern coast of Sifnos. The best way to reach Cheronissos is by bus, or car. We caught the bus from Apollonia to Cheronissos. The bus stop is the end of the road, from which there’s a small set of stairs down a steep cliff. I was blown away by the view over the small harbour, dotted with fishing boats, and the tiny, tranquil beach.
Visiting Cheronissos
Down by the water, we had the beach to ourselves for a short while, before we were joined by an elderly Italian man from Milan. His wife and daughter trailed after him, and he explained that they’d been visiting Sifnos for twenty years.
We spent most of the morning in the water or lying on the beach, and while a few other families trickled in during the day, it never felt crowded. Cheronissos was exactly the idyllic beach setting I’d been dreaming about when I booked the trip to Greece.
Tavernas in Cheronissos
Before we left, we had lunch at one of the tavernas on the water. There are two choices in Cheronissos: one that is on the beach, and the other which is right over the water. We chose the latter, and I have to admit, I slightly regretted it. The waitress here was quite hostile and the food was not very nice. It was probably the only below average meal we had in Greece. I think had the service been a little warmer, we would have been less likely to mind the food. I recommend trying the other place. Luckily, the setting was so unbelievably beautiful, that nothing else really seemed to matter too much.
Have you been to Sifnos, or other parts of Greece? Would you like to? I’d love to hear what you think in the comments!
