Crete is the largest island in Greece and feels like a world of its own. From the Minoan Civilisation in antiquity, to the successive invasions of the Romans, the Saracens, the Byzantines, the Venetians and the Ottomans, Crete’s long and dramatic history has shaped the island’s architecture, culture and cuisine.
Where to stay in Crete
Heraklion is the capital of Crete, and the largest city. The best places to stay in Crete are Chania and Rethymno, which are the two most beautiful cities in Crete. Chania has the most sights and attractions for tourists, including a stunning Old Town with a Turkish Quarter, a Jewish Quarter and Venetian Port.
Rethymno is much smaller than Chania, and is a beautiful seaside town with a maze of Venetian streets, a beach and a lively, relaxed atmosphere. We stayed in Rethymno when we visited Crete, and I am very happy we stayed there!
Flying to Crete
There are airports in Heraklion and Chania, offering direct flights to dozens of European destinations.
Getting around Crete
Crete is enormous. I recommend hiring a car in Crete, and choosing your base depending on what sights you want to see around the island. Drives between destinations and attractions can be long, so plan ahead to make the most of your trip.
