The English Cotswolds are the fairytale ideal of country life. Lacock is regarded as one of the best-preserved villages in the Cotswolds and was the perfect, picturesque stop to break up the drive between London and Bath. I’ve been industriously editing all my old, forgotten photos lately, and I’ve just found these photos of Lacock from a 2012 trip (yes, bit overdue). It was only a brief stop; Lacock is small enough that you can see most of the town by foot. Unfortunately, these photos were from the days before I took much of a serious interest in photography and so they don’t quite do Lacock justice, but I wanted to share a few that I could salvage. Since this trip was pre-blog and pre-passion for photography, my Dad and I shared all our photos at the end of the trip and they’re all jumbled – assume the better photos in this collection are by my Dad.
Lacock is a village in Wiltshire, a 25 minute drive from Bath and a 2 hour drive from London. Lacock’s earliest permanent settlers were from Saxon times and the town’s main heritage attraction, Lacock Abbey, was founded in the 13th century. During the Middle Ages, Lacock developed a thriving wool industry, which supported the town into the 19th century. Since the decline of the wool industry, new development has been minimal and today most of the town is owned by the National Trust, which is responsible for its meticulous preservation.
There’s lots to discover in Lacock village; quaint traditional stone cottages, the old workhouse, the medieval tithe barn, the old lock-up and the village church.
In Photos is my series just for celebrating a place through photos. If you’re looking for more practical travel tips, check out some of my other travel itineraries.
