Cast in the Aegean Sea, the Greek Island of Patmos is a popular site for Christian pilgrimages. It’s known for the Monastery of St John and his Cave of the Apocalypse, which is where he saw a vision of Jesus. It is here that he wrote his Letters to the Ephesians. I’d heard of these in primary school but for me, they had no meaning. I’m not a practicing Catholic but it was still surreal to stand in Ancient Ephesus where St John was banned from the city and a few days later to be standing where he wrote his letters to them, which I’d heard of in school.
Patmos is a peaceful, sleepy island and it is known for having a very spiritual vibe. I found it relaxing. I also found it very beautiful in the town where the certain buildings seem to serendipitously coordinate with their surroundings.
