Rush hour by the Rialto Bridge

By the time we arrived in Venice, we had worked up an appetite. We’d taken the train from Verona in the morning, but halfway through the trip a ticket inspector realised that we’d booked the train tickets for a month earlier – an admin error on our part that we hadn’t noticed. We were kicked off the train in Vincenza, and had to purchase new tickets and wait for the next train to Venice. The morning was not off to the smoothest start.

I didn’t see the Rialto Bridge last time I visited and I was hoping to see the Rialto Markets. Unfortunately, we were too late but this didn’t stop us from having one of the most scenic meals of my life. It’s vying for top spot with  lunch overlooking the beach in Monterosso.

We were lucky enough to get a table right on the edge of the water, with perfect views of the Grand Canal and the Rialto Bridge, the oldest of the four bridges spanning the canal. The gorgeous bridge is raised in the middle to allow tall ships to pass underneath and houses shops on either side of the peak. It was considered an outrageous design doomed for failure by critics during the 16th century when it was completed yet it has stood the test of time to become one of the icons of Venice.

It was hard to focus on my delicious seafood spaghetti with such beautiful action unfolding before my eyes out on the canal!
