Sunday Stories 31.01.16

It’s been a busy week this week, but I’ve been lucky enough to be able to do lots of the work I love. We had a quiet Australia Day this year, after working on revisions for an article in the upcoming issue of Electrify Magazine until the early hours of the morning, I was content to get brunch at The Kettle Black and spend the day chilling out.

ACDC Lane

I had a mini photo excursion into the city one evening to photograph more laneways, this time focusing just on the eastern half of Flinders Lane, between Elizabeth & Spring Streets. More photos to come in this week’s Photo of the Week, but in the mean time, here’s one from outside Cherry Bar in ACDC Lane which, to me, looks like it could have been taken 40 years ago – mostly just because of one guy’s skinny flares.

Celebrating one year in Melbourne at Burma Lane

There was no doubt as to where we should go to celebrate our first year of living in Melbourne. Burma Lane in Little Collins St is one of our favourite restaurants in Melbourne. The first time we went was New Year’s Eve of 2013 while I was visiting David, who was in Melbourne for an internship. Once again, we enjoyed little share plates, cocktails with our meal and we shared a dessert. Usually, I’d have wine with dinner, but Burma Lane is the one restaurant where the fresh, aromatic cocktails pair perfectly with the Burmese-inspired dishes.

Wynard Cafe, South Melbourne

When I heard that one of my favourite cafes, Giddiup, had opened a second cafe, our weekend brunch plans were settled. Wynard, like its big sister, is tiny and in South Melbourne, but it shares a warehouse space with Made in Japan, a Japanese ceramics importer. The little warehouse space is flooded with natural light, thanks to a series of skylights, and has spot on coffee and an interesting menu. I had the pumpkin with broccolini and poached eggs and Dave had a smoothie bowl. We will definitely be back!

Exploring Melbourne: Richmond

Richmond is right next to the city and filled with bars, cafes and pubs, yet I have hardly spent any time there since moving to Melbourne. Today we wandered around two of the busiest streets, Swan and Church Sts, stopping for coffee and out-of-this-world fruit toast at St Thomas, poking around a couple of furniture stores and eventually sharing a pizza at Baby, which is owned by Chin Chin’s Chris Lucas. The pizza at Baby is easily one of my favourites in Melbourne!

Here & There by AA Gill

I recognised AA Gill from his entertaining Gourmet Traveller column, AA Gill is Away, although he also writes for Vanity Fair, GQ and Sunday Times. Here & There is a collection of his travel columns from the magazine. I’ve been completely absorbed in his witty, insightful and evocative writing.

Illustrated Love Letters

I’ve picked up my black pen again and have resumed drawing  my favourite places in the world. This week, I drew the sun-lit gallery at The Frick Collection in New York City and the brightly coloured bathing boxes on Dendy Beach in Brighton, Melbourne.
