For a first-time traveller to the U.S. (like me), the country is overwhelming. It’s huge and full of diverse cities that march to the beat of their own drum. After our stay in New York, we wanted to go somewhere where the pace is a little slower so we could relax, but not so slow that we’d be pressed for entertainment during our stay.

h2 style=”font-size: 25px;”> 1. It’s the birthplace of the cocktail
Not only does New Orleans have more bars per capita than anywhere else in the US, but it’s the birthplace of the cocktail! Some of the city’s classic inventions include the Hurricane and the Sazerac, which you can try at the hotel of the same name. Other inventions, such as the go-cup and the drive-through-daiquiri don’t quite have the same cachet as the Sazerac, but are equally intriguing concepts!
The drive-through-daiquiri isn’t quite as dangerous as it sounds (in theory). Passengers are allowed to buy a drive-through-daiquiri, but it’s served with the straw lying flat across the top of the cup to abide with open container laws, assuming you don’t open the cup till you get home. The driver of course, isn’t meant to have one at all. I feel we are going to need to rent a car for the day, just to try this!

When I think New Orleans, I think food. Eating & drinking is what David & I do best, so where better to kick back for a week than a city which has invented so many unique dishes, it could singlehandedly write a 100% born & bred menu?
New Orleans is responsible for mouth-watering sandwiches like the muffaletta and po’boys, famed for their flaky, sweet beignets and renowned for heartwarming gumbo.
Not only does the Crescent City have a history of strong culinary traditions, but these days it’s also attracting some of the hottest culinary talent in the states.
Innovative chefs and entrepreneurs are taking advantage of the lower rents and the city’s food-loving culture to launch their cutting-edge restaurants in New Orleans.
When it comes to US foodie cities, New Orleans is at the top of the heap.

h2 style=”font-size: 25px;”>3. The music scene
Folks in New Orleans are clearly creative types. Not only did they invent the cocktail and a host of delicious dishes, but New Orleans also invented jazz.
Invented. Jazz.
Does that seem like a crazy concept to anyone else?
I’m not the biggest live music fan (last time I admitted this, my sister asked if I have a soul, so be nice in the comments!), but I would definitely make an effort to check out some of the live music. From what I’ve seen on Trover, it looks like a lot of fun, even for non-musos!

h2 style=”font-size: 25px;”>4. Letting loose on Bourbon Street
America’s most infamous party street is renowned for it’s wild nightlife, where anything goes. It’s where jazz meets cocktails…and go-cups! It might be the height of “touristy” in New Orleans, but we’re not going to miss it!

h2 style=”font-size: 25px;”>5. Strolling the French Quarter
Who hasn’t seen pictures of New Orleans pretty, historic neighbourhood and wanted to stroll down the streets (go-cup in hand? Just kidding). We wanted to go somewhere that was a nice place to be, and not worry too much about having a long list of things to do. The French Quarter (and I’m sure, more of New Orleans too) looks like just the place to do some wandering.
Have you been to New Orleans?

New Orleans seems to be making its way very quickly to the top of my bucket list. It looks like such a beautiful city and the buzzing atmosphere and music scene (and of course the delicious food) makes it too irresistible a destination. So jealous that you’re going! Can’t wait to hear all about your trip 🙂
Never been to New Orleans, but so jealous that you will! Definitely check out the French Quarter, and stop by the famous Cafe du Monde for its beignets! I wish you a good time. 🙂
Thanks! 🙂
