Melbourne's Royal Botanic Gardens in Autumn

Autumn in Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens

Melbourne is enjoying a long, crisp Autumn this year, which is a relief as I’ve been dreading winter since last spring. I’ve been making the most of the milder weather, spending as much time outdoors as possible on the weekends. The Royal Botanic Gardens stretch from Southbank to South Yarra, along the Yarra River.

A couple of weekends ago, we went for a big walk through the gardens to greedily inhale the fresh air and admire the pretty Autumn foliage – a novelty that still hasn’t worn off since moving from sub-tropical Brisbane, which is green year-round.

We started near the top end of the gardens, mostly so we could grab a takeaway flat white from the coffee stand outside the Arts Centre. I was thrilled to find that while lots of the trees had erupted in beautiful golden leaves, there was plenty of foliage in shades of fiery reds, bright oranges and luminous yellows. The bright greens and yellows which still hung around reminded me of Central Park on my last day in New York, just as Autumn began to creep in.
