Over the weekend, I spent about an hour or so walking around Melbourne’s CBD. It was the first time I picked up my camera this year, so not surprisingly, I got mixed results. I’ve taken some of my favourite laneway & arcade photos from this trip and turned them into Melbourne’s Laneways & Arcades in black and white.
I acknowledge the Boon Wurrung and Woiwurrung people as the First Nations owners of the lands now recognised as Melbourne. I pay respect to their Elders, lores, customs and creation spirits. I recognise that these lands have always been places of great natural beauty, culture and community.
If you’re walking from South Bank to the city, don’t take the Flinders St tunnel. Once you’ve crossed to the city side using the pedestrian bridge, you can walk along the Yarra under the plane trees and Arbory Bar. When you reach the Princes Bridge, take the stairs up to Flinders St Station & Fed Square. A much more scenic route! The Princes Bridge Stairs transport you from the peace and quiet of the Yarra to the hustle and bustle of Flinders St Station. There is SO much going on in this photo, but I love that it could only be in Melbourne. To my left is Flinders St Station, and to my right is Fed Square. On the busy road, a tram passes a horse and carriage – you won’t find this in any other Australian city. The Australian Open is in full swing in Melbourne. For those who can’t attend in person, it’s being screened in Fed Square in the city. Deckchairs provided!I’ve always admired St Paul’s Cathedral’s bright orange spires and their positive, inclusive message about welcoming refugees. It’s opposite Fed Square and Flinders Station, so it’s seen by hundreds of thousands of people every day.I love the blindingly bright white Art Deco facade of the Myer Centre in Bourke St Mall, and the bright orange Gothic Revival spires of St Paul’s. Melbourne is full of wonderful architectureI love the contrast between the elegant facade and modern street art around the corner in this alleyway off Flinders Lane.
Elizbeth Street is lined with pastel, Victorian-style facades. I particularly liked this message in one building.
This laneway spilling out of Royal Arcade is particularly cosy, and less overcrowded than Degraves St or Centre Place.
Arcades & Laneways. Melbourne has several beautiful arcades, such as the Royal Arcade, and is famous for its laneway cafe culture. Centre Place (pictured) is opposite the more famous Degraves St, but I prefer the former. The feminine, ethereal flags advertising new musical about an Australian dressmaker in the 50s, The Ladies in Black, fluttering against the art deco facade of the Myer department store.
Running between the Bourke St Mall and Little Collins Street, Union Lane is a riot of colour and probably one of my favourite street art laneways.

Came across your blog from Alex’s. I love those watercolour maps you do SO MUCH. I forwarded to a couple girlfriends and one wants to get one done of her honeymoon! 🙂
My pick is either 7 or 11. Maybe 7. I also love the message of 7 and I’m a sucker for pretty building facades.
Thank you so much! That’s so exciting to hear, thank you 🙂 I’m a big sucker for facades too, SoHo in NYC is particularly amazing for pretty facades – the neighbourhood is actually a cast-iron facade historic district, so pretty!
Genevieve, I’m trying to do the same thing! My goal is once a week, too. Only I need to further it and commit to ten photos, like you have here. No matter what. There are several I like in the series here. Great job!

Thanks Ingrid! I’ve since missed a couple of weeks, but fortunately I got out on the weekend and finally got some photos.
